About the Council
The Council for Opportunity in Education is a nonprofit organization dedicated to furthering the expansion of college opportunities for low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities throughout the United States. Its membership includes more than 1,000 colleges and agencies. Through its numerous membership services, the Council works in conjunction with colleges, universities, and agencies that host TRIO programs to specifically help low-income students enter college and graduate. More than one million low-income students and students with disabilities each year receive college access and retention services through our member colleges and agencies.
About the Role
As the right-hand to the Executive Vice-President, this position is responsible for a variety projects, particularly conceptualizing and moving new initiatives, completing short- and long-term projects and analyses, and representing the EVP both within and outside the Council.
Primary Responsibilities
Writing: Responsible for written projects that will include concept papers, opinion pieces, meeting follow-up, and routine correspondence. It is anticipated that at least 50% of the individual’s time will directly or indirectly be writing-related. While there may be some proposal development included, this will not be a principal focus of the position.
Project Planning and Trouble-shooting: Responsible for tracking accomplishment of projected benchmarks for major projects of the organization; also responsible for incubating some new projects, identifying problem areas and suggesting possible approaches to problems identified.
Thought leadership and strategic planning: Responsible for identifying medium and long-term opportunities for the organization and recommending how each organizational unit might best position itself to take advantage of such opportunities and avoid potential hazards.
- Advanced degree preferred; bachelor’s degree required.
- Excellent communications skills, both written and oral;
- Interest in higher education policy and educational opportunity.
- Flexible schedule with ability to travel and work extended hours as required.
- Two to four years experience in a responsible position required.
- Must have the ability to work as a team player with staff and other professionals
- Other duties as assigned.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
