The American Chemical Society Division of Membership and Scientific Advancement is the major entity responsible for recruiting, retaining and recognizing membership. Developing and implementing the programs, products, and services that support members are our most critical role. With more than 164,000 members worldwide, providing an integrated suite of benefits that meet current and potential member needs is vital to the future of the Society. The Department of Membership Marketing promotes all of the products, programs, and services that support the value proposition of ACS membership. The department also has a leading role in the development of technology that supports member and non-member communications and transactions with the organization. The department promotes, assesses, and makes recommendations to enhance all of the products, programs, and services that support the value proposition of ACS membership.
Position Summary
This position is responsible for the International (non-direct mail marketing) recruitment strategies and activities as well as the development of new innovative activities (test marketing of unique membership concepts) and their corresponding metrics to determine how best to attract new members to the Society. The incumbent will drive the product management and marketing in the creation and execution of sound strategies based upon solid market and customer analyses and will deliver controlled market testing plans. The job holder will refine the new product offerings and commercial strategies to ensure the organization is pursuing the most promising and valuable membership and retention opportunities. She/he must work very closely with the Membership Affairs Committee (MAC) and other business units with ACS in order to translate brand positioning into inspiring employee messaging that fully articulates our sense of purpose. The position reports to the Assistant Director, Membership Marketing.
Must establish productive plans for novel ideas — need to be comfortable with ambiguity and thrive on change. Must create new technology opportunities, new directions for the Society, and positive futures for scientists regardless of where they work or live.

Position Accountabilities
Develop and execute marketing and commercial plans, in the successful testing and introduction of new membership recruitment concepts. These activities include identifying key value propositions, positioning, and pricing strategy needed for new members.
Conceive overarching, innovative, and strategic marketing plans to accomplish said goals.
While an individual contributor is also a strong manager. Recognize and stimulate unique ideas with high potential impact.
Able to design, develop and ‘roll up the sleeves’ to drive execution.
Prioritizes International markets and develops strategies to offer local country scientists a reason to believe that membership in ACS has greater benefits to them compared to other scientific society’s. Refines the value-proposition as needed to drive membership.
Works closely with other ACS departments and divisions to raise awareness of International issues and helps resolve them e.g. receive dues payments in local country currency.
Fully understand the drivers/barriers, influences and nuances involved in institutional client decision making
Able to work collaboratively across the organization to identify, prioritize and leverage all internal touch points.
Translate the overall brand story into compelling messaging and engagement with the institutional audience. Set the direction for how our brand is delivered to (and experienced by) institutional audiences.
Co-develop compelling executional frameworks and campaigns that create breakthrough levels of interest, engagement and loyalty to the American Chemical Society.
Achieves established marketing goals within allocated expense budget.
Provides guidance to the governance committee. Makes written and oral presentations as required.
Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge
- Bachelors degree strongly preferred.
- 10+ years in a corporate marketing setting
- Strong background in strategic branding and customer loyalty
- Demonstrated experience with Innovation (new product marketing)
- Experience managing International recruitment activities is highly desired
- Fluency in one or more foreign languages preferred
- “Magnetic” personality, able to elicit support from internal key stakeholders
- Creative visionary yet comfortable working in a multi-layered institution which makes intentional, well-thought-out decisions
