The American Chemical Society Division of Membership and Scientific Advancement is the major entity responsible for recruiting, retaining and recognizing membership.  Developing and implementing the programs, products, and services that support members are our most critical role.  With more than 164,000 members worldwide, providing an integrated suite of benefits that meet current and potential member needs is critical to the future of the Society.  The Department of Membership Marketing promotes all of the products, programs, and services that support the value proposition of ACS membership.  The department also has a leading role in the development of technology that supports member and non-member communications and transactions with the organization.  The department promotes, assesses, and makes recommendations to enhance all of the products, programs, and services that support the value proposition of ACS membership.

Position Summary

This position is responsible and accountable for meeting Board-established membership, retention and revenue goals, and expanding ACS membership consistent with the Society’s strategic plan.  The position is also expected to project and adjust acquisition and retention targets as membership replacement needs fluctuate.  The incumbent is responsible for developing and conveying relevant information for use by senior management.  The selected individual defines, conceives and oversees execution more than 200 annual recruitment activities in multiple mediums including web, telemarketing, video, email, social networking, exhibits, and direct mail.  He/she will also be a critical change agent in the development of new retention initiatives including recognition programs and affinity partnerships. Membership Marketing promotes all membership products, programs, and services, and the incumbent develops marketing strategies in cooperation with business units throughout the Society.  The position oversees management of the ACS membership list rental and is responsible for revenue goals.  The incumbent reports to the Assistant Director, Membership Marketing.

Position Accountabilities

Defines strategy to meet the Board-established membership and retention goals for the organization.

Conceive overarching, innovative, and strategic marketing plans to accomplish said goals.

Strong manager. Develop the talent on the marketing team by coaching and growing talent already on the team, and recruiting top talent. Empowers the team -drives decision making to the lowest possible appropriate level.

Project and update anticipated membership acquisition targets and as needed. Create and maintain reports on unpaid and dropped members to facilitate the achievement of year-end membership number. Provide projections and report actuals to management.

Execute more than 200 web and site-based recruitment marketing efforts annually and oversees the execution of retention efforts delivered by mail, email, telemarketing, and the web in order to insure effectiveness. Negotiates vendor contracts.

Develops marketing and analytical reports that communicate the success of the acquisition programs -Analyze results of retention programs in order to make informed decisions and formulate direction of future efforts.

Develop and monitor a budget in excess of $5 mil.  Achieves established marketing goals within allocated expense budget.

Responsible for assessing the value proposition of Society membership to its members, prospects and the communications, products and services that impact that value.  Develops recommendations to enhance and protect that value proposition.

Collaborates with other Society units and staff to identify innovative problem-solving approaches to the established goals.

Collaborates with, provides advice to, and develops conversion (1st year or graduated renewal) plans with cross-divisional stakeholders.

Provides Assistant Director with assessments and recommendations regarding departmental management, staff usage, workflow, and process efficiencies.

Subject matter expert on Online Membership Application (OMA) and Online Membership Renewal Application (OMR).  Determine strategies and oversee function.

Responsible for revenue goals of affinity partnership programs.

Coordinates the exhibit for all ACS programs, products, and services at ACS national meetings.

Provides guidance to the governance committee.  Makes written and oral presentations as required.

Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience leading / managing a team utilizing outstanding team development / mentoring / coaching skills is REQUIRED.
  • Extensive B2C corporate marketing experience is REQUIRED. Experience in an association or other not-for-profit setting is helpful. Candidates with experience in the publishing industry are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Large volume (500k+ records) direct response marketing experience is REQUIRED.

Salary:

$100,000 + excellent benefits. No relocation fees are available.

Location:

This is an onsite position in downtown Washington, DC. Due to the team-oriented nature of the supervisor role, it is NOT subject to a teleworking situation.
